A room in the warren
Five Cooper Street has been a Bideford pub for centuries. It poured its first pints as the Malt Scoop, later became the Patch & Parrot, and was Grade II listed in 1993 for the history held in its walls. It stood empty from 2018 until Alasdair Gould took it on, restored it with care, and reopened the doors on 15 April 2026.
The restoration uncovered what time had hidden: ancient timber beams, original windows, curved seating and the old tiled floor in the main bar. Bigger inside than it looks, the building unfolds room by room, a warren of quiet corners with the letting suites tucked at the top. Stay the night and the wine bar, kitchen and garden are all just down the stairs.
